Shingo Francis is a painter, draftsman and installation artist who employs a minimal and abstract approach to his work to explore color, time and expanse. Francis received his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1992 from Pitzer College in Claremont, California. In 2001, he moved his studio from Los Angeles to Japan, where he contemplated and immersed himself in its traditional and popular culture. Francis later returned to the United States, living and working in Brooklyn, New York for 12 years. Currently, he works and lives in both Japan and Los Angeles.
Francis was awarded the Fumio Nanjo Award at Spiral, Tokyo in 2003. In 2008 he was selected as a Solo Project artist by Tsutomu Mizusawa for ARCO 08 in Madrid, Spain, and has been invited as an artist-in-residence at Art Omi in upstate New York and Montalvo Arts Center in Saratoga, California. His recent exhibitions have appeared at the Sezon Museum of Modern Art in Japan, and the Martin Museum of Art in Texas, amongst others.
